Why You Need An Attorney

The Bankruptcy Code is full of traps for the inexperienced. Pro se (do-it-yourself) bankruptcy debtors do not realize that the timing of the filing of their case, certain debts, or disposing of assets before the case is filed can save or cost them thousands of dollars. Also, deciding under which chapter to file is a decision of critical importance that can only be competently explored by an experienced bankruptcy attorney who files under all chapters.

Some people get satisfactory results without a lawyer, but generally the outcome is better and the case goes smoother with an experienced bankruptcy attorney. Thus, the attorney fees are usually a bargain and frequently more than "pay for themselves."

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Colorado warns that "bankruptcy is a complex process." The Court strongly recommends that individuals use a lawyer to handle their bankruptcy cases. Retaining an attorney will significantly improve your prospect of a successful bankruptcy case.
